PM defends proposed legal age of 18 for pot

HALIFAX (NEWS 1130) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he believes the marijuana task force got it right when it suggested setting 18 as the minimum legal age for consuming pot.

Trudeau made the comments during an interview with our Halifax station NEWS 95.7 this week.

“The advisory board struck the balance classifying it along with alcohol as something that you have to be of legal drinking age to purchase,” says Trudeau.

“I think they struck the right balance on that but we’ll have more to say as we bring out legislation.”

Some medical experts have suggested the government set a minimum age of 21.

“The reason why we’re doing that [proposing the legal age be 18] is to protect our young people and to remove the black market, the criminal elements, from it,” explains Trudeau.

The federal health minister is currently considering the dozens of recommendations made by the task force and is expected to introduce a marijuana legalization bill in the spring sitting.
