Canucks try to take a bite out of the Sharks tonight

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Canucks are in action this evening, taking on the San Jose Sharks in their first game since the All-Star break. It’s the first game of the season between the two Pacific Division rivals, and with several meetings on the horizon, Chris Tanev expects both teams will want to set the tone early.

“I think this happened last year too when we faced them five times in a month. We know we have to play well against them. We know how good they are and we know it’s a big game tonight. I don’t know if it will get heated but we have to show that we are willing to compete and that we aren’t afraid of them. We have to go right after them.”

Brandon Sutter says Vancouver can’t afford to take unnecessary penalties against the Sharks when San Jose can send out star players Brent Burns and Joe Pavelski on to the ice.

“They have some pretty special weapons on their top powerplay and even their second unit has guys that can score. They have experienced guys that can move the puck and shoot the puck a lot. Our penalty kill will have to be very good against them. The best way to kill penalties is to not take them in the first place, so we will try to do that.”

Ryan Miller gets the start in net and he has been red hot at home this season with a 12-4-1 record and a 1.98 GAA. The Sharks will counter with North Vancouver native Martin Jones between the pipes.

The puck drops at 7 p.m. and you can watch the game on Sportsnet and we’ll have updates in NEWS 1130 Sports at :15 and :45 past the hour.
