Crown asked to consider charges against cop after Mountie killed

LANGFORD (NEWS 1130) – The Independent Investigations Office is asking Crown Counsel to consider charges against a Mountie after Constable Sarah Beckett was killed in a crash in Langford last April.

The agency says another RCMP cruiser had attempted to pull over a civilian who didn’t stop and eventually collided with Beckett’s vehicle.

“The IIO was notified of the incident immediately but released jurisdiction based on initial information provided to the IIO. Subsequently, police provided further information that resulted in the IIO commencing an investigation,” says the agency’s Marten Youssef in a statement.

The focus of the IIO’s investigation surrounds the RCMP officer who tried to stop the man who eventually crashed into Beckett’s car and the information that was relayed in the follow-up investigation.

Several months after the crash, Crown Counsel approved charges against the civilian involved in the collision. Kenneth Jacob Fenton is waiting for his trial and has been charged with several offences including impaired driving causing death, flight from police causing death and dangerous driving causing death. The 28-year-old has also been hit with a charge of driving with a blood alcohol level in excess of 80 milligrams and refusing to provide a blood sample when asked by investigators.

On April 5th, 32-year-old Beckett died when her cruiser was struck at an intersection in Langford. The 11-year veteran of the force and mother of two was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.
