STORM CENTRE: School closures, snowfall warning in effect

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Every time you think it’s over, the Lower Mainland gets hit with another wallop of winter weather.

Environment Canada says a low pressure system is moving across Washington State today and it will bring a lot more snow for both Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. And a second powerful pulse of snow will hit tonight with anywhere between 10 to 15 centimetres expected across some parts of the region by tomorrow morning.

NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate says much of the 10 to 15 centimetres falling during the overnight will likely hit inland in the Fraser Valley.

The cold air isn’t going anywhere anytime soon — it’s expected to stick around all week. The snow is expected to stop falling tomorrow afternoon and the sun will make an appearance but there won’t be a great melt with the expected high to be about three degrees.

You are being told to check the latest conditions before getting in the car, taking transit or catching a flight at YVR.

Snow-covered roads and icy streets could also mean you might be waiting for a while. Anne Drennan with TransLink says that’s the reality of what happens when we get this kind of snowfall. “People just have to know that when there is heavy snow here that there will be delays.”

The City of Vancouver has decided to suspend Green Bin collection to focus on garbage collection during this latest blast of winter.
