STORM CENTRE: Several school districts cancel classes

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A snowfall warning has been lifted in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, with the possibility of more snow in the valley this morning.

Environment Canada’s public alerts for the Fraser Valley reads:

“Bands of snow rotating around a low pressure system off the coast will continue to stream across the region tonight. Snowfall amounts will vary widely depending on the location and intensity of the individual bands. Amounts of 5 to 10 cm are likely.”

NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate says much of the snow falling overnight hit inland in the Fraser Valley.

The cold air isn’t going anywhere anytime soon — it’s expected to stick around all week. The snow is expected to stop falling tomorrow afternoon and the sun will make an appearance but there won’t be a great melt with the expected high to be about three degrees.

Snow-covered roads and icy streets could also mean you might be waiting for a while. Anne Drennan with TransLink says that’s the reality of what happens when we get this kind of snowfall. “People just have to know that when there is heavy snow here that there will be delays.”

The City of Vancouver has decided to suspend Green Bin collection to focus on garbage collection during this latest blast of winter.

The City also says warming centres will be open tonight for those in need. The Hall (1739 Venables) opens at 10 p.m., WestEnd Community Centre , Carnegie Community Centre open at 11 p.m.
