VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Nightmare road stories are again emerging as hundreds of drivers and their passengers are still stuck northbound on the Coquihalla Highway.
Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt is now open after being closed overnight. Southbound traffic has been flowing through the area since 4 a.m.
One trucker says it took her and her husband 30 hours to get from Calgary to Chilliwack in a track which usually takes 10.
She says there were whiteout conditions in the Coquihalla Lakes area with chain-up in both directions.
Jonathan called our newsroom on his way to Golden, and says he was ready for winter conditions.
“I knew that this could happen, so I made sure that I brought lots of water, food, I’ve got sleeping bags to stay warm just in case, stuff like that and a car equipped with wither tires and properly winterized.”
He says most drivers he spoke to were upbeat.
Another driver from Vancouver called to say he had lost his patience with truckers who he claims weren’t chaining up.
Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on Highway 5 Thursday night into Friday morning.
