Up to 100 millimetres of rain heading for the Lower Mainland

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – At least it’s not more snow.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley as a strong Pacific front parks itself over the Lower Mainland.

The rain is expected to be heaviest along the mountain slopes, with up to 100 millimetres expected by Thursday morning.

At the same time, temperatures are expected to remain in the double digits, bringing rain to the mountain tops as well. But Dave Campbell with the BC River Forecast Centre says that’s not necessarily bad news given how much snow is on the ground.

“As you get to the higher elevations, there’s several feet of snow now, and a lot of that snow can act as a bit of a sponge,” he says. “It can soak up the water as it flows in even as it starts to get warm.”

Campbell adds the centre is keeping an eye on all run-off rivers from the Valley to the Sunshine Coast.

The Seymour and Coquitlam rivers are not currently under any advisories.

The heavy rain will taper off Thursday morning as the front makes its way eastward.
