Weather system causing problems on area highways

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It is much more wet than white, but this latest blast of winter weather is bringing more troubles to BC’s West Coast.

The system is expected to bring up to 100mm of heavy rain to parts of the Lower Mainland, prompting the BC River Forecast Centre to issue a high streamflow advisory for Howe Sound, the North Shore, the Fraser Valley and Sunshine Coast for Wednesday and early Thursday.

While it hasn’t been definitively linked to the storm, a rockslide has shut down the Trans Canada Highway east of Yale in the Fraser Canyon.

There are no reports of vehicles being hit or any injuries but there were some drivers stranded by the slide late yesterday.

Crews were working last night to turn drivers around and get them off the highway.

The slide was to be assessed at daylight and Drive BC expects to issue an update on Highway One north of Hope by 10am.

There was also rocks down on the Sea to Sky Highway early this morning north of Squamish, but crews dealt with it quickly and Drive BC confirms Highway 99 to Whistler reopened not long after.
