Police aware of another ‘queue-jumping’ path before the Alex Fraser

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – If you’re taking the Alex Fraser Bridge anytime soon, you may want to think twice if you plan to cut across a gravel path to get ahead of traffic. Police say they’re aware of drivers using this so-called short cut.

Some drivers heading south towards the crossing have been using the Annacis Island exit, however, before getting to Cliveden Avenue, they cut across a gravel path that connects to the southbound lanes of the Alex Fraser Bridge.

“This is a gravel path that is intended for emergency vehicles or tow trucks,” explains Constable Melissa Wutke who adds it’s also unfair to other drivers. “Obviously, it’s dangerous because you’re going off the roadway and then cutting into traffic.”

If you get caught, Wutke says the fine can be about $200 and as many as six penalty points.

This isn’t the first time police have had to monitor queue-jumpers trying to take the bridge. Last year, drivers were getting caught sneaking through the industrial park on Annacis Island to get to Cliveden Avenue from Highway 91 southbound. As a fix, the Transportation Ministry put in a new traffic signal preventing drivers from making a right onto Cliveden Avenue.
