Landslide in Chilliwack forces evacuations of three homes

By

CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) – Three homes have been evacuated after a landslide in Chilliwack this morning.

An area on Vedder Mountain came down overnight, and crews are worried the homes on Giesbrecht Road could be in danger of falling rock.

No one was hurt.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Deron Brown says work above the homes may be to blame.

“There’s a company up above doing blasting and they have the permits to do so. It’s a rock quarry and some of the debris, I believe, from the blasting came down on the houses — like not large amounts, just small.”

Geotechnical crews are on scene assessing the situation and have closed Vedder Mountain Road.

No word on when it will reopen or when the affected people will be allowed home.
