Federal Liberals see bump in the polls

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – The prime minister’s trips to Washington, DC and Europe last week appears to have given the federal Liberals a bump up in the polls.

According to a new survey from Nanos Research, in just one week, the party jumped up two points, receiving 39 per cent support. The Conservatives fell three points to come in at 29, while the NDP held steady at 17.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a successful week of international trips, receiving assurances from US President Donald Trump that Canada’s trade deal will only be tweaked. He then went to France and Germany after the Canada-EU trade deal was approved in a vote.

The Liberals led in all areas of the survey as people were asked who their preferred prime minister is and 46 per cent of people said Trudeau, 17.3 per cent prefer interim leader of the Tories Rona Ambrose, 10.9 per cent said Tom Mulcair and less than five per cent chose Elizabeth May.

More than six-in-10 Canadians (64.9 per cent) believe Trudeau has the qualities of a good political leader while 51.3 per cent think similarly to NDP boss Mulcair. While more than one-in-three Canadians think Ambrose (36.2 per cent) and May (35.4 per cent) have the qualities of a good political leader.

The survey is based on rolling interviews of a 1,000 respondents in a monthly period.
