Calgarians asked to weigh in on potential Olympic bid

CALGARY (NEWS1130) – Should Calgary toss its name in the hat to host the Olympics in 2026?

A new online questionnaire wants to know your answer.

The Calgary Bid Exploration Committee launched survey for residents of the city, Banff, Canmore, and other communities, as well as First Nations in the area.

“Understanding what people in Calgary and the surrounding area think about a potential bid is an important part of our exploration process,” CBEC General Manager Brian Hahn explained. “We want to know where they see the benefits to submitting a bid, but also what their concerns are.”

Results from the survey and other engagement will be compiled for a report going to council in July. Council will make the final decision on whether to proceed or not with a formal bid.

Formal work to bring the Olympics to Vancouver went back more than a decade to the founding of the Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Bid Society in 1998.

Throughout the bid’s history and even after Vancouver was named host city of the games, the event was the frequent target of organized dissent, mainly by anti-poverty and native groups. Much of the critical attention has focused on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, regarded as Canada’s poorest postal code.
