Thousands take part in Pink Shirt Day in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It is Pink Shirt Day today.

The anti-bullying awareness campaign has gained serious traction over the last several years but it comes from humble origins.

Co-founder Travis Price says the movement started with 800 students in Nova Scotia uniting to back a kid who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

“We’ve grown into an international movement that is an annual event in Canada that many people take part in every year.”

He says there are some worries that the message could get lost because of commercialization, but Price says that sponsors have been critical.

“Without them I wouldn’t be able to speak in schools, without them kids wouldn’t be able to hear my message. So I think it’s very important that we have those people.”

He says the pink shirts are a great way to start a discussion about a problem that still exists in schools today.
