Trudeau and Trump talk borders, softwood lumber and women’s issues

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Donald Trump have had a phone conversation this afternoon.

The prime minister’s office is offering limited details about what the two leaders talked about, only releasing a statement saying border co-operation, softwood lumber, women entrepreneurs and the upcoming G7 and G20 summits were discussed.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale explains what message the government is trying to convey on the border.

“Make sure that those borders are safe and secure but also efficient and expeditious and that travelers moving in both directions are treated properly.”

But he couldn’t say if the issue of asylum seekers from the US was brought up.

He does say his office is doing an analysis of the source these refugees fleeing to Canada, and wouldn’t say if President Trump’s policies play a role.

Canada is still trying to land a softwood lumber deal, but it’s unclear if we’re any closer to an agreement.
