Trudeau meets with auto industry ahead of expected NAFTA negotiations

TORONTO, ON. (NEWS 1130) – Canada is still awaiting word from the administration of US President Donald Trump on when the US wants to begin formal talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, and Canada’s auto industry may be impacted.

While Trump has said he only wants to tweak NAFTA, some economists have expressed fear that possible changes to rules of origin could hurt the industry. However, union bosses have taken a different approach, claiming business has been lost due to NAFTA and there could be an upside for Canada if auto companies shift more operations away from Mexico and back to the US.

The prime minister is meeting with industry insiders in the Greater Toronto Area. It’s not clear what message Justin Trudeau will deliver, but the industry will likely have a lot to say about what the government should do when trade talks begin.
