Special weather statement issued, more snow on the way

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The only silver lining to the all the snow and wintry weather we’re seeing right now is that spring is right around the corner.

But in the meantime, keep the snow shovel handy and bundle up. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver, saying a cold, moist and unstable air flow is going to hit the South Coast hard. Again.

It’s the never-ending winter that’s just not supposed to happen here in Metro Vancouver and NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate says it’s definitely unusual to have snow this late in season.

“It’s become the new norm. We had a number of snow squalls last night, they’ve since tapered off. The snow storm is long gone for today. The high is about six degrees. But tonight [another storm] is coming. It begins as freezing rain or sleet this evening then late overnight it will become near freezing with snow becoming fairly widespread into Tuesday morning. I’m sure we’ll get some accumulations again early tomorrow and then it changes to rain in the afternoon.”

Lacate adds tomorrow’s high is about four degrees.

For the Fraser Valley a special weather statement has been issued for east of Chilliwack and west of Abbotsford. Environment Canada is calling for as much as four centimetres of accumulation in some places tonight and another two to five centimetres tomorrow. However, things are expected to change to rain by Tuesday afternoon.
