Snowfall warning ended for Metro Vancouver, forecast unchanged

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The worst seems to be over, at least when it comes to the latest round of wintery weather to hit Metro Vancouver. But don’t get too comfortable just yet.

The snowfall warning previously issued by Environment Canada for the region has been cancelled, however, it remains in place for the Fraser Valley. However, the agency has issued another special weather statement for the south coast with the possibility of more snow this evening. It sounds like this one will mostly impact higher elevations with up to five centimetres of snow. The alert says wet snow will mix with rain and melt at lower levels.

A snowfall warning has been issued for Howe Sound.

NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate says despite the agency pulling the snowfall warning, his forecast isn’t changing. “Today it will be maybe one centimetre’s worth of snow by the coastline — the rain mixes in quite quickly. Some of the higher ground, talking about the North

Shore of course, the eastern most suburbs and the higher terrain could possibly see up to five centimetres of wet snow before the freezing level rebounds.”

He adds this afternoon it will be raining, but the snow will persist in the outlying reaches of the Fraser Valley a little bit longer this evening.

Environment Canada says snow in the Fraser Valley will likely be heaviest this evening over the eastern sections of the region where as much as five centimetres could fall by tomorrow morning.

As usual the mix of rain, sleet, snow and freezing temperatures makes for dicey road conditions. You are being encouraged to slow down especially on major roadways, side streets and in parking lots.
