Crews respond to Vancouver Island diesel spill

VANCOUVER ISLAND (NEWS 1130) – Coast guard and environment ministry crews have responded to a small diesel spill near north Vancouver Island — the second accident in the area in a week.

The Ministry of Environment says it received a report yesterday afternoon of a spill from a fuel tank near the Port Harvey Marina, located south of Port McNeill.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has confirmed a sheen on the water and it says an estimated 178 litres has spread over the area, but the fuel cannot be cleaned up.

The incident follows a 500-litre diesel spill at a salmon farm in Echo Bay — about 70 kilometres from Port Hardy — last Sunday that fouled some beaches local First Nations use for clam digging.
