Targeted shootings in Surrey, North Vancouver not connected, police say

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – While two shootings in Metro Vancouver are both believed to be targeted, and while they both happened in broad daylight within one hour of each other, police say there doesn’t appear to be a connection between the two events.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has identified the victim of yesterday’s shooting outside a Surrey Comfort Inn as 29-year-old Birinderjeet Justin Bhangu of Surrey.

Officers found Bhangu bleeding inside a parked SUV just before 2:30 p.m. He was taken to hospital, but later died of his injuries.

A dark coloured Nissan Pathfinder was seen fleeing the crime scene, but the SUV has not yet been recovered by police. No arrests have been made in the case.

Meanwhile, North Vancouver RCMP have released a photo of a black, late model, four door Nissan sedan, which was seen speeding away from the scene of a shooting on East 12th Street.

A 22-year-old man was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound, and is now listed in serious but stable condition. No arrests have been made in that case either.

“Right now we have no belief that these incidents are related,” says Cpl. Meghan Foster with IHIT. “Looking for linkages would be part of our investigation, and we are consulting with North Vancouver throughout the process.”

Anyone with information about the Surrey shooting is asked to call the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-4448, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

If you have information about the North Vancouver shooting, call 604-985-1311, or Crime Stoppers.
