New US travel ban impact on Canada not clear

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Be patient, be aware and expect delays.

That advice today for Canadians not born here, but with plans to travel to the United States.

Richard Kurland, a Vancouver-based immigration lawyer and policy analyst, says American authorities have the right to thoroughly question you –even if you have a Canadian passport.

“It’s an unpleasant thing, but that’s the new Trump reality.”

He’s even suggesting, “it would not be prudent to engage in US-destined travel, unless you absolutely must, within the first two to four days of a newly-minted presidential executive order. That’s because the situation may be fluid.”

Kurland adds guards or customs workers who racially profile would-be travellers are common on both sides of the border.

US District Judge Derrick Watson issued his ruling this afternoon after hearing arguments on Hawaii’s request for a temporary restraining order involving the ban. His ruling prevents the executive order from going into effect Thursday.

Still, Canadians headed south of the border are being warned to be extremely obedient.

“If you were born in one of the prescribed, quote/unquote bad countries, you’re fair game. It’s not unreasonable to seek additional information regarding your home country.”

Kurland adds he’s been fielding lots of calls and questions from clients.

“Absolutely, this is almost a daily occurrence. The best advice to individuals seeking entry to the United States is simply to be patient and be aware. Expect delays on entering the United States.”

Hawaii and several other states are already taking legal action against the revised ban targeting six countries with large Muslim populations.
