‘No shocker here:’ younger generation responds to BC economy report

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Young people are reacting to a new report that claims British Columbia has the worst performing economy in the country for the younger demographic.
The report from advocacy group Generation Squeeze suggests home ownership, high-paying jobs, and financial savings are difficult-at-best in BC for people under the age of 45.
NEWS 1130 asked young people in Vancouver to weigh in.
“Rent and housing here is just crazy so I’m not that surprised to hear that at all.”
“I’m definitely just waiting until that moment where I think I can get a better job now”
“The idea of all of a sudden having a family you never know what might happen.”
“It’s always disappointing to hear things like that, especially when you are a young person”
“It’s kind of depressing to talk to your parents because the bought a house for $100,000 and you can’t buy anything for $100,000.”
“I’ve already gone through university and that in itself is kind of screwing you over.”
“I’m definitely feeling it, yeah.”
“It’s almost a shame because it’s turning a city that’s quite young-looking, pushing and driving all the young people out, and turning into almost like a ghost town.”
“No shocker here.”
The report estimates the younger generation in BC has lost about a decade of work since 2001 to down payments, Medical Services Plan, and other costs compared to the average Canadian.
