Third period letdown costs Canucks in loss to Stars

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Canucks came into their five game home stand just five points out of a playoff spot, unfortunately for them, it turned into a disaster after a 4-2 loss to the Stars.

Tied at two in the third, Dallas sniper Tyler Seguin ripped a point shot past Ryan Miller on the power play for the game winner. Vancouver finished its home stand 0-3-2 and sits 14 points out of a wild card.

“We focused on our effort tonight and it was there. But we didn’t score, we needed a few dirty goals.” said Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin.

The Canucks had a great opportunity to take an early lead when Adam Cracknell was given a double minor for high-sticking Henrik Sedin but Vancouver was unable to capitalize.

Dallas took the lead less than two minutes after killing the penalty. Ales Hemsky got his first goal of the season when he beat Ryan Miller on breakaway.

Sven Baertschi scored his 17th of the season to tie up five minutes later, but the Stars regained the lead with just eight seconds left in the first when Esa Lindell’s weak wrist shot fooled Miller.

It looked like Dallas would take their lead into the third, but Ben Hutton was able to score with a man advantage with 1.9 seconds to go in the second period. It was just Vancouver’s second power play goals in its last 34 chances.

Another highlight of the middle period was Canucks defenceman Nikita Tryamkin dropping the gloves against Dallas sniper Jamie Benn after the two got tangled up.

Seguin broke the 2-2 tie 9:07 into the third before Radek Faksa doubled the lead off an ugly turnover in front of the Vancouver net.

Miller made his 11th start in the last 12 games and made 32 saves in the loss.

The Canucks have just 12 games left on their schedule and kick off a five game road trip Saturday in Edmonton.
