Many small business owners are undecided voters: survey

By

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – With less than two months until we head to the polls, a pre-election survey shows many small business owners in BC haven’t decided which party to vote for.

“Ninety-six per cent of our members say they plan to vote, but they’re not sure who to vote for quite yet,” explains Richard Truscott with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

He adds before they decide, there needs to be more effort by party leaders to support small businesses. And Truscott feels that’s because they aren’t confident their concerns will be addressed during the campaign. “Business owners are feeling pinched by the affordability issues in the Lower Mainland especially and if it’s tough to live here, it’s also tough to run a small business. It’s very expensive. And those are issues that entrepreneurs hope the politicians address the election campaign.”

Truscott adds business owners also want to see some policies that relate to their needs. “Business owners want to see some policies that relate to their concerns about red tape, taxes [and] about labour shortages — those are really the meat and potatoes issues that small business owners really want the parties to address.”

Affordability is also a concern with eight-in-10 owners say running their business has become less affordable and they expect the issue to get worse in the years to come.

The provincial election is slated for May 9th.
