Former children’s watchdog sues BC government

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The former BC children’s watchdog is going after the province for damages and pension benefits.

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s lawsuit comes only months after she finished her tenure.

She finished her term in November, after serving 10 years as BC’s first representative for children and youth.

She has now returned to her job as a provincial court judge in Saskatchewan.

She claims in her lawsuit that there was a verbal agreement to pay her 18 months of pension benefits for every year she worked – but that amount, she asserts, was not forthcoming.

Furthermore, she says the government is motivated by “malice and bad faith” in the disagreement.

The suit also accuses the Minister of Children and Families of refusing to meet with her in the last year – and that because she suffered mental distress, she is entitled to aggravated damages.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.

The Ministry of Justice says the government has received the claim and will review it, but won’t provide any other comment.
