Alcohol a possible factor after deadly crash in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – More details are emerging after a bizarre string of crashes yesterday evening in Surrey left one woman dead and her passenger in serious condition.

Mounties say at about 6:30 p.m., officers responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of 72nd Avenue and 152nd Street. When they got there they figured out a green GMC van was travelling east on 72nd Avenue when it hit several cars. The van continued eastbound when it crashed with a sedan that was travelling northbound. The woman behind the wheel of the sedan, a 62-year-old from Port Coquitlam, died and her 84-year-old passenger is in the hospital.

Police say the driver of the suspect vehicle was injured and taken to the hospital. He is now under arrest and it’s believed alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. “The Surrey RCMP Collision Investigation Unit in concert with ICARS (Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service) will be conducting an investigation that will try to determine what the speed was at the time of impact,” says RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann.

He says it’s too early to speculate on what potential charges, if any, may be recommended. “These investigations are very complex and require a lot of technical data, all of which would be provided to Crown Counsel which, in the end, will determine what charges would be appropriate to lay.”

Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen anything to call Surrey RCMP at 604.599.0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477).
