Independent Investigations Office launches court action against VPD

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Independent Investigations Office has launched court action against the Vancouver Police Department.

The action stems from a shooting that happened at a Canadian Tire on Grandview last November.

Daniel Rintoul, 38, was shot and killed by a police officer after he took a hostage at knifepoint.

According to the petition filed by the Independent Investigations Office, seven officers who were considered witness officers have refused to give statements to investigators.

The court documents say the officers insist on seeing video footage, among other things, before they answer questions for the IIO.

Just last week, Tom Stamatakis, with the B.C. Police Association, said police officers are getting legal advice and choosing not to provide statements because they’re exercising their right not to.

He was commenting on the case of Myles Gray, who died after a confrontation with Vancouver police off of Joffre Avenue in Burnaby in August of 2015. Police had pursued him there from Southwest Marine Drive. The IIO claims officers have not been cooperating with that investigation.

The legal petition against the VPD also names Chief Adam Palmer.

The document says the IIO demanded that Palmer order his officers to cooperate with investigators, but it also says Palmer responded by saying he needed to seek legal advice.
