Trudeau and company hit the road to sell the budget

TORONTO, ON. (NEWS 1130) – One day after the federal Liberal Party tables its second budget, the prime minister has hit the road, for what you can call, the budget road show.

Justin Trudeau is on the move to promote the new fiscal plan, which doesn’t come with a lot of new spending but does place a focus on skills training, innovation and gender equality in the workforce.

Trudeau started his sales pitch to the public by visiting a Downtown Toronto college this morning. “[It’s] an investment in Canadians. An investment in people.”

As Trudeau promoted the measures that are aimed at helping people develop the skills to get jobs, he also had to jump on the defensive over controversial aspects of his plan like cancelling the transit tax credit. “There was extremely low take-up and the money is better spent actually investing in opportunities for more people to take transit.”

The Liberals say eliminating the 15 per cent tax credit for commuters who buy a transit pass will save the government $150 million a year.

Meanwhile, the finance minister is also making the rounds, and while he decided against taxing capital gains in this budget he’s leaving the door open to future changes — a move that is creating some anxiety among investors on Bay Street.
