Fewer Canadian travellers blocked at US land border

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – New data obtained by The Canadian Press shows fewer Canadians are being turned away at the US land border in recent months despite mounting concerns that Donald Trump’s immigration policies are making it much harder to cross.

Refusals of Canadians at American land crossings dropped 8.5 per cent between October and the end of February compared with the same five-month period a year earlier, according to US government statistics.

The figures stand in contrast to a series of recent anecdotal reports of Canadians being denied entry into the US, and persistent questions about whether Trump’s presidency has led to a rise in blocked travellers.

Some frustrated Canadians have blamed the policies of his administration, pointing to controversial attempts to ban arrivals from several predominantly Muslim countries.

But Canadian immigration advocates caution the numbers don’t tell the whole story as they don’t reveal if there have been changes around why people are being turned away.

They also point out the statistics showed fewer people are trying to cross the border — suggesting there is indeed a Trump effect.
