Evacuation alert issued for Johnsons Landing, site of 2012 landslide

JOHNSONS LANDING, BC (NEWS 1130) – A small community on Kootenay Lake is under an evacuation alert for the threat of a landslide.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay says they’ve received a report that a nearby creek is running muddy, and materials on its slope appear to be shifting.

It adds the alert is a precaution to ensure residents’ safety.

This affects 50 and 60 homes in the area, according to Anitra Winje with the district. Residents should be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

Emergency management and Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure officials have been dispatched to assess the situation.

In 2012, four people were killed when a landslide swept through Johnsons Landing, burying several homes. Community members were not allowed to return for two years after that slide.
