Hundreds of cab owners meet to discuss ride-hailing response

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Five hundred cab owners met in Vancouver last night to discuss their response to the province’s announcement ride-hailing will come here by year’s end.

It seems a lawsuit challenging this decision is still a possibility.

The owners of the companies aren’t getting into much in the way of specifics, but Carolyn Bauer with the Vancouver Taxi Association says cab shareholders Vancouver, Victoria and Prince Rupert attended this meeting at Fraserview Hall.

“They’re angry, they’re frustrated, they’re sad,” says Bauer. “They don’t know how they’re going to survive. They don’t know how they’re going to feed their families. They just have no idea.”

And she says that announcement from the province three weeks ago that ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft will be able to operate here by year’s end has yet to fully sink in.

“We had our lawyer there, Peter Gall,” says Bauer. “He did a great job going through everything that’s taking place, and we took questions and answers, and they were just heartfelt, heartfelt.”

Bauer says her organization will be getting more feedback from other cab organizations that didn’t make it to this meeting before forwarding on the collective proposals to the government, likely in the coming weeks.
