Vancouver seniors kicked out of subsidized retirement homes

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The BC opposition party is calling attention to a west-side Vancouver retirement community where 21 seniors have been given six months to leave.

They’re trying to place some of the blame on the BC Liberals.

When the owners of the Terraces of 7th were looking for tenants, they signed contracts with Vancouver Coastal Health to bring subsidized residents.

But the city’s housing market has changed, so the company is terminating those contracts including the one Caroline Coutts’ mother signed.

“This is an absolute disgrace, and it should not be allowed to go ahead.”

Coutts is blaming the owners but NDP MLA Selina Robinson says the Liberals share some responsibility.

“We need a government that is prepared to make sure that there is some subsidized assisted living for British Columbians as they age, and right now, this has not been a government who has looked at that at all.”

“How can we live with ourselves as British Columbians allowing these people in their 80s, 90s and two of them well into 100, and say ‘I’m sorry, you need to find another place to live’,” added Robinson.

She says the BC Liberals clearly haven’t made publicly-funded assisted living a priority but also didn’t say whether an NDP government would.
