BC government doing a good job of spending your money: report

By

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – The BC government’s doing a “generally” good job spending our money, but the province’s auditor general says there’s still room for improvement when it comes to disclosing debt levels.

“The way you look at it in the budget is slightly different than the way you see it in the final results in the financial statements. Those that are looking to compare those two should see it looking the same,” explains Carol Bellringer.

While speaking to reporters, one week before the writ drops, Bellringer says she’s expecting those concerns, as well as some about caseloads, to be addressed within one year. “It would be within the next budget process. Neither of them are complicated to sort through, so we would expect to see them in the next budget.”

Bellringer wants caseloads actually locked into a piece of legislation. “The temporary income assistance is not dependent on how much the government wishes to spend in the year in terms of budgeting, but rather they must provide it because of the legislation and explaining why the budget ends up being different from the actual payments is an important thing.”

Today’s report follows up on one released two years ago which focused of how the Christy Clark government handles revenues. Bellringer says all three concerns she raised in 2015 have since been addressed.

Bellringer adds more transparency’s also needed when it comes to how debt is disclosed.
