BC Government news releases could be pre-election nerves: political scientist

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Another day, another news release.

It feels like the BC government communications department is in overdrive these days.

A political scientist from the University of the Fraser Valley says it could be a sign of a lack of confidence from the BC Liberals as the provincial election approaches.

Hamish Telford notes if the Liberals are re-elected with a majority government they’ll be coming up to 21 years in power.

“That’s twice the shelf life of a successful government in most Canadian jurisdictions these days. Stephen Harper had 10 years, Jean Chrétien had 10 years. Usually after about a decade Canadians decide it’s time to change governments.”

“A government that’s been in power for 16 years needs to be worried. This is past the time when electorates decide it’s time for a change.”

Telford says the provincial government has kept purse strings tight over past few years but has recently sensed voters want more cash put towards core services such as healthcare and education.

BC voters head to the polls on May 9th.
