Greens see jump in support before election campaign officially begins: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The leader of the BC Green Party is enjoying a major surge in support, according to the latest poll numbers. This comes ahead of the provincial election campaign, which officially begins tomorrow.
Twelve per cent of those polled say they have a better opinion of Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver than they did three months ago, according to Insights West. He now enjoys 35 per cent support which is two points lower than BC NDP Leader John Horgan, and five up on Christy Clark who comes in with 30 per cent support.
“For the Greens it has always been interesting. They do very well in the early stages of the campaign and as the level of support seems to taper as the election continues and people get around to choosing a government,” explains pollster Mario Canseco.
He points out two-in-five of those who participated in the poll remain undecided about which candidate would make the best premier. “Horgan is regarded as the best leader to tackle housing, poverty and homelessness (39 per cent), health care (37 per cent), education (36 per cent) and accountability (29 per cent). Clark is ahead on dealing with the economy and jobs (38 per cent) and energy and pipelines (29 per cent), while Weaver leads on the environment (45 per cent). Clark and Horgan are virtually tied on crime and public safety (25 per cent to 24 per cent).
The writ officially drops on Tuesday and British Columbians will go to the polls on May 9th.
