Reminder to teen drivers after scary crash in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Yet another reminder directed at teenage drivers after a frightening crash in Vancouver yesterday.

Two of six teens packed into a car were thrown from the vehicle in the Shaughnessy neighbourhood. It happened just after 3:30 p.m. on Osler Street near the Crescent when the Mazda 5 lost control while heading west.

Police feel speed was an obvious factor, given the damage to the vehicle. “In a case like this, these people were driving down a road and… then all of a sudden this vehicle started spinning and came to a rest into a tree,” explains Constable Jason Doucette.

Thus the renewed warning for young drivers, especially with nicer weather on the way. “Days are getting longer. School is starting to wind down. People are getting excited for the summer and teenagers will be getting behind the wheel and we’re encouraging them to make sure they’re following their restrictions on their driver’s license and take speed into account. These are dangerous machines and things can change in just a flick of the switch.”

Doucette adds teen drivers, specifically, need to know their limits and think twice before taking any risks.

All six people were taken to the hospital with what’s believed to be minor or non-life threatening injuries. The VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit is investigating what may have led up to the crash.
