NDP questions why Interior bridges free to cross

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Why should we pay tolls here in the Lower Mainland when those in the Interior get to cross bridges at no cost?

The NDP is out with that question at it continues its push to eliminate tolls altogether.

“Christy Clark’s trying to tell the public that bridges and infrastructure can’t be built in this province without tolls, yet they built a bridge in Kelowna and they’re not paying a toll,” says NDP North Delta candidate Ravi Kahlon.

He’s referencing the Bennett Bridge and the planned second crossing in the Interior.

“We believe that it’s just not fair for one specific region to carry the burden of all the costs,” says Kahlon. “Our question to Christy Clark is clear — if she says that we must pay tolls, is she charging tolls to the constituents of Kelowna?”

The NDP is promising to eliminate all tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges if it forms government — using money from the so-called prosperity fund.

But the $500-million in there will only cover tolls for three years, and it’s unclear how the party plans to finance the bridges in the long term.
