Easter dinner, not greaster dinner

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – What are you cooking up for the Easter long weekend? Turkey? Ham?….Goose? Depending on your answer, and how you clean up afterwards, it could be an expensive weekend.

Hubert Colas from wastewater forum FluqsAqua says many people pour liquid grease down the drain, without understanding the consequences, or the cost.

“$2 million every year, just in the Metro (Vancouver) area. Everywhere it’s a problem that needs to be solved and the public doesn’t know about it. When the grease goes into your sink it hardens, and when it hardens, it’s like a ball. It captures everything that you put down the sink and sewer so it grows over time.”

“If it clogs your pipes it may back water, especially when there’s a rainfall coming. It clogs, it just breaks down, it just floods your basement.”

That can add up to an expensive visit from a plumber.

Colas encourages everyone to let their grease harden and dispose of it properly, no matter what you plan on cooking.
