Snowboarder ends up on Sea to Sky Highway

By

CYPRESS (NEWS 1130) – A snowboarder who went out of out-of-bounds at Cypress Mountain has amazingly made his own way to safety.

Mike Danks with North Shore Rescue says two snowboarders in their 20’s ventured out-of-bounds and then split up, with one making it back to the resort and the other continuing down – not a good idea.

“He got to a part where he could not go any further, where he ran into basically a sheer drop that’s known to us as the Waterfall. That’s an area where we’ve had a number of fatalities in the past.”

Fortunately, Danks says the guy called police saying he was stuck – and he was told to stay put while rescue crews were mobilized.

“As crews were getting close to heading in on that trail we got another call back from police saying that individual had made his way out to the highway. For us that’s a big relief, it’s something that doesn’t happen very often.”

The snowboarder had come across a kind of escape route created by North Shore Rescue and made it safely to the Sea to Sky Highway.

Danks says the snowboarder was lucky that he could see where he was going and didn’t get caught in an avalanche.
