Anti-racism forum in Surrey looks to educate young people

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – As the alt-right movement comes further into the open in the United States, a forum in Surrey tonight will be focusing on white supremacy. A former member of that movement will also be there after turning his life around.

For Tony McAleer, the switch began to happen after his kids were born. He’s now the Director of Life After Hate, a Chicago-based non-profit group, that aims to inspire and educate those living with a racist mentality.

He wants us to understand what draws people to violent, far-right groups and to see it through a lens of compassion. “With compassion has to come healthy boundaries and consequences and I think when we look at the problem through that lens, we can actually be more effective in dealing with the people that are drawn to it.”

McAleer says often times people who associate with far-right groups live with a lot of shame and have a history of trauma and isolation. “Our experience in the United States, we’ve taken hundreds of people out of hate groups and compassion is the key.”

The forum is being put on by the Kids Play Foundation and it starts at 6 p.m. at the Taj Park Convention Centre on 132nd Street.
