BC NDP ‘not even close’ to fundraising targets, pleads for cash

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The New Democrats appear to be having some trouble reaching its fundraising targets, but leader John Horgan doesn’t seem too worried his party will lose any momentum as the campaign continues.

The party has sent an email to its supporters, pleading for more cash. It says it needs to raise at least $100,000 online by Friday at midnight “to keep up this campaign’s pace.” The email goes on to say, “We’re not hitting our fundraising targets. Not even close.”

And it asks: “With only 20 days left in this campaign, we urgently need your help. Can you chip in $5 or more before Friday’s deadline? This is the biggest goal we’ve ever set and it’s critical we meet it.”

Near the end of the email it also states “between the BC Liberals’ big-money donors and their relentless attacks, we can’t afford to get comfortable.”

At a campaign stop, NEWS 1130 asked Horgan about the email, asking about him going “cap-in-hand” to supporters weeks ahead of the vote. “I think your characterization kind of misses the whole point of election campaigns. We have 28 days to do our level best, to speak directly to people and we encourage people to help us to do that by financing our campaign.”

Horgan insists he’s not worried about a potential coffer shortfall. “I don’t feel dire at all. I’ve been going into campaign rooms throughout the Lower Mainland, in the Interior and on [Vancouver] Island and people are pretty excited. We’re going to try our level best to keep pace with the most corporate-funded political party Canada has ever seen.”

Documents filed with Elections BC show last year the BC Liberals are said to have raised $12.47 million while the BC NDP came in second and the BC Green Party came in third having raised $763,667.
