NDP leader says Liberal ‘inaction’ driving young families out of Metro Vancouver

By

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – The NDP leader’s latest campaign stop involved him meeting with young families trying to find housing affordable enough, so they can keep living in Metro Vancouver.

Standing outside a small, aging house in North Burnaby, John Horgan asked them not to leave yet.

“It’s not the playland of the rich. It’s the place where people should be able to set down roots and raise their families. Help is on the way…(thank you) on May 9th.”

Horgan also took another jab at Liberal leader Christy Clark after his party released a year-old video of her having an un-documented meeting with local developer Peter Wall.

“Who’s interest is it to see if housing prices go up? It’s the interest of the wealthy developers. Not surprised that the Wall’s and other developers support the Liberals.”

Horgan was standing in front of Ian Reeve –a man who grew up here and now plans to move, with his aging parents, to another city.

“BC’s an amazing place. I love living here. I’m very sad to leave.”

Horgan, who’s promising to build 114,000 homes over 10 years, continues to suggest Clark cares more about developers.

“The BC Liberals sat idly by for years ignoring the crisis because it was working very well for them. Their developer donors were making lots and lots of money. Those are the ones that have been bankrolling the BC Liberals.”

Meanwhile, some Grade 5 students from Gilmore Elementary crashed the Burnaby campaign stop.

Amateur reporter Angelo Cortese got to ask more questions than mainstream media covering the event.

“Do you have, like, a group of people that follow you almost everywhere trying to record almost everything that you do say?”

Horgan responded, “Well, I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. There’s someone right behind you doing that right now (laughs) and that’s unfortunate, but that’s part and parcel of modern politics. Thank you for your question. That was not a set-up.”

Later, the nine-year-old was asked if he has hopes of becoming a reporter or a politician.

“To be completely honest, I don’t know. I don’t know. I kind of want to represent people –like a politician.”

If he could vote today, Cortese also said he’d support Horgan.
