VPD auction highlights need to report stolen property

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Hundreds of unclaimed stolen items including high-end bikes, computers and gold jewellery will be on the auction block this weekend in the Vancouver Police Department’s Recovered Goods Auction.

The annual event will be hosted by Able Auctions in Surrey on Saturday with the money raised going into the City of Vancouver‘s general revenue.

“It’s bittersweet because we do have a pretty impressive haul, but that means we’re unsuccessful in getting a lot of these items back to their owners,” VPD Supervisor of Property and Evidence Control, Justin Hull says. “What we’re talking today with a lot of people is the importance of reporting your bike or whatever you’ve had stolen to police.”

This year features a large selection of gold jewelry, more than 250 high-end bikes, snowboarding and surfing gear, golf equipment, tools, designer purses and sunglasses, musical instruments and an assortment of household items.

The goods have gone unclaimed for at least the past six months, with the more peculiar items including a Sodastream Power sparkling water maker, a Rowenta vacuum, a box of vintage Meccano metal parts and oriental scrolls.

A public preview on Thursday and Friday between noon and 6 p.m. will offer anyone a chance to check out the items.

“And if you see any property you’ve had stolen, we’d be happy to pull it from the auction and take it back to the property office and do some investigation work. If we can determine it’s yours, we will definitely get it back to you,” Hull says.
