White Rock changes how it cleans its water supply

WHITE ROCK (NEWS 1130) – After coffee-coloured water came out of faucets in White Rock the city is making some changes to how they treat it and they claims the odd colour is due to a chemical reaction.

Dan Bottrill is the Chief Administrative Officer for the city and he says they’ve been using chlorine as a secondary disinfectant after residents were concerned about monochloramine. “For decades it has been building up in our distribution system. The chlorine is actually reacting with the manganese in our distribution system.”

He adds that reaction with the naturally occurring element is causing the distinctive colour water and now they’re trying something a little different. “By using chloramine, which has a reduced concentration of chlorine, there is no reaction.”

Bottrill says a number of health organizations are adamant the chemical is safe and should increase water quality in White Rock. “Both Health Canada, the US EPA and the World Health Organization have determined that it is safe.”

He hopes water quality in White Rock will improve with this latest change.
