COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A  crash on Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam has killed two children and a woman.

RCMP say it was a head-on crash on a stretch of the Lougheed between Como Lake and Pitt River Rd.

The two girls who died were aged three and nine. The woman who died was in a different vehicle.

The families of those killed have been notified, but no names have been released.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Dan Guilfoyle says three vehicles were involved. “There was a head-on collision, the specifics are still being investigated.”

“In addition to the three deceased, we have five individuals who have been transported to hospital receiving treatment, I do not have the specifics on the injuries of those taken to hospital.”

Also during the Friday afternoon rush, a major crash on Highway 1 brought it to a standstill for kilometres.

At least half a dozen ambulances responded to the multi-car collision near 176th at Surrey, with police and fire crews also at the scene.

The crash happened just before 5:00 p.m. There’s no word yet on the extent of injuries. Traffic was backed up from east of 232nd St before the highway re-opened.

NEWS 1130‘s Bruce Claggett was there.

“Some of the people were trapped so long in this traffic jam trying to go west that they started to leave their cars. You saw people at the side with little kids who definitely had to go to the bathroom and were relieving themselves. And others just sitting at the side of the road doing absolutely nothing.”

“Of course, RCMP were allowing some people to make U-turns and get back onto the HOV lane and make it back.”
