Vancouver’s mayor makes attempt at revamped city logo, again

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It appears that controversy surrounding the City of Vancouver’s desire for a revamped logo is creeping back into the spotlight.

After facing criticism from local graphic designers for the previous $8,000 effort earlier this year, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson wants to try again.

He has put forward a motion to be considered at the May 2nd city council meeting that would stop the roll-out of the previous redesign and work with the local chapter of the Graphic Designers of Canada on new ideas.

Working in a collaborative fashion is a good way to go, according to Lindsay Meredith with Simon Fraser University. “When you design these things, they’re usually tested in front of focus groups and you do a lot of dry runs to make sure you’re getting the right consumer response,” Meredith said.

The motion also calls for a public and online vote to decide the finalists. “Given the last reception [the logo] got, letting people in on the story this time probably isn’t a bad idea,” he says, admitting it may not lead to the best logo.

The work would be done within existing budgets, according to the motion.

The city had initially put out a new logo because staff said the current one had not been updated in more than a decade.
