Deadly fight between two patients at UBC care home, IHIT called in

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Two separate reviews are underway after an elderly man died at a care home at UBC late last month.

It happened at the Purdy Pavilion on April 26th, according to Vancouver Coastal Health. “It’s a 24-hour residential care and most of the people that live there have cognitive impairments,” explains Anna Marie D’Angelo with the health authority.

She adds two reviews are taking place in connection to this incident. One is focused on the authority’s residential care program, and the other by a “licensee.”

The health authority isn’t going into exact detail about what led up the man’s death. “As IHIT [Integrated Homicide Investigation Team] is investigating, but we offer our sincere condolences to the family.”

Homicide investigators say they were called out just after 8:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a fight between two patients. “There was an altercation between two of the male patients that was brief in nature. One male was transported to the hospital as his health was deteriorating and he did die the following day,” explains IHIT Corporal Meghan Foster of the 81-year-old victim.

She adds there is no risk to the public and stresses this is an isolated incident. Foster says they’ll be in touch with Crown Counsel to figure out what, if any, charges may be laid.

The names of the victim and the accused are not being released at this time.
