Support for the BC Greens a one-off?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A local political scientist is wondering if the popularity of the BC Green Party at the provincial election was merely a one-time bump from voters with no alternative.

While the final result of the BC election is still unknown, it’s clear the Greens have made history by being elected in three ridings- two more than last time British Columbians voted.

Political scientist David Moscrop says while the Greens have lots of supporters in their own right, it’s possible there were many disenfranchised voters who threw their support behind Andrew Weaver’s party.

“There were people who were upset with the BC Liberals after 16 years and folks who didn’t trust the NDP and were pretty happy the Greens said that they weren’t going to take corporate or union money and decided that was the clean way to go and it supported their conscience.”

“Because they weren’t tainted. There were a lot of voters I imagine who said ‘a pox on both your houses and we’ll go Green’.”

But will that support for the Greens last?

“That may not be the case in 18 months or in four years. People may be more comfortable going back to the two main parties.”

“If I had to bet, outside of electoral reform, I’d imagine that’s what happens during the next election.”
