Suspended police chief of Victoria has now quit

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) Victoria’s embattled police chief has resigned.

Frank Elsner’s lawyer has informed police board members he considers his ’employment relationship’ with them to be at an end.

Mayor Lisa Helps, who co-chairs the board, says he’s no longer collecting a salary or benefits, but he may be entitled to some compensation.

“Not severance, no. We are in an unresolved dispute with him over the issue of indemnification and so that’s a matter that will also need to be resolved.”

No word yet who’s replacing him as Chief Constable, but Helps has confirmed that will be discussed at the next police board meeting Tuesday.

“We’ll take the time we need to make the right decision. Rushing anything is not a good thing. At the same time, there may be some ways we can make the process quick, but again, the board hasn’t turned its mind entirely to that yet, but we’re not going to come out the door necessarily with an announcement next Tuesday –just so you know.”

Elsner was suspended in April of last year when embarrassing social media exchanges with the wife of a lower-ranked officer were exposed.
