Granville Island report reveals bridge elevator plan

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A final plan to revitalize Granville Island has revealed a proposal for an elevator from Granville Street Bridge to the heart of the island below.

Other plans include building a pedestrian and bike bridge across Alder Bay, expanding the public market, using the soon-to-be empty Emily Carr University as an arts and innovation hub, and creating a central plaza.

The report, titled “Granville Island 2040: Bridging Past and Future” is the result of an 18-month project commissioned by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

It outlines ideas to improve access, expand the public market, embrace arts and restore public spaces.

The next steps are to find out if the construction projects are structurally and financially possible, so there’s no word yet on when any of the plans will become a reality.
