Man linked to fatal crash of a BC RCMP officer pleads guilty

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – The man linked to a fatal crash that killed an RCMP officer on Vancouver Island has pleaded guilty.
Kenneth Fenton has pleaded guilty to two charges; impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.
Police say Fenton was behind the wheel of a pickup truck that slammed into the cruiser driven by Constable Sarah Beckett in Langford April 5th, 2016.
The 32-year-old mother of two died at the scene.
“It means that there won’t be a trial on this matter,” says Dan McLaughlin with the Crown. “It means that we’ll now move to a sentencing hearing, at which point the Crown will have the opportunity to present its submissions with respect to an appropriate sentence.”
Beckett was an 11-year veteran of the RCMP, and thousands lined the streets in Colwood to attend her regimental funeral.
Fenton is back in court on June 6 for his next appearance, which will determine a date for his sentencing hearing.
“There’s been some concern about the delay in the proceedings, but it’s important to know that throughout this process, the prosecution team has worked diligently to ensure that our obligations to the court, to the family of the victim and to the accused, are met in a timely and ultimately just fashion.”
